Cowboy Museum

The Cowboy Museum displays artifacts of the Old West and 1870s San Antonio. There is also a fine gallery of western art. It is located directly across from the birthplace of Texas, the Alamo. Gift shop. Daily 10 am to 7 pm. $3 adults, $2 children ages 6-12.

Hertzberg Circus Collection

This museum has an extensive collection of circus memorabilia, including the miniature coach of Tom Thumb and many other historically important circus items. Monday-Saturday 10 am to 5 pm. $2.50 adults, $2 seniors, $1 children ages 3-12, under age 3 free. Located in downtown San Antonio off the River Walk.

Institute of Texan Cultures

The Institute of Texan Cultures is an educational center where learning about Texas history and cultures is fun! They tell the Story of Texas through our Exhibit Floor featuring contributions of 27 of the ethnic and culture groups that settled the state, as well as through a host of special exhibits and events including the annual Texas Folklife Festival, publication, and audiovisuals. Whether you are the casual tourist, the serious researcher, or the inquisitive child, your tour of Texas should begin here! Gift shop. Tuesday-Sunday 9 am to 5 pm. $4 adults, $2 seniors and children ages 3-13. In HemisFair Park, downtown off I-37 at Bowie and Durango.

Lone Star Buckhorn Museum

This unique museum includes the Buckhorn Saloon where you can sip complimentary Lone Star Beer or root beer. This museum of the west has an example of the headdresses of virtually every horned creature on Earth. The grounds include the O. Henry House where the famous writer chronicled many of his stories. Daily 9:30 am to 5 pm. $5 adults, $4 seniors, $1.75 children.

Mark Harden's Artchive Museum

Created by local virtual exhibition curator, Mark Harden, this site has some of the world's best examples of scanned art on the internet. Mark was recognized recently at the Museums & the Web 1998 conference in Toronto, Canada for his extraordinary graphic representation of art on his web site. Each gallery includes new material for your return viewing pleasure, from new scans in the Recent Acquisitions gallery, to additional art criticism excerpts, to new installations of feature exhibits. There are now more than 2,000 scans from over 200 different artists in this extraordinary electronic museum. Mark also designed the ARTCO web site.

McNay Art Museum

This museum, donated by art patron Marion Koogler McNay (1883-1950) is Texas' first modern art museum. The collection focuses on 19th and 20th century European and American art, and 20th century graphic arts. The grounds of the McNay are as beautiful to see and visit as the museum itself. The McNay is located a distance from downtown so you will need a taxi or a private automobile to visit this exceptional San Antonio cultural attraction.

Mexican Cultural Institute

Located in San Antonio's HemisFair Park, the Mexican Cultural Institute is Mexico's cultural ambassador in the United States. It presents all facets of Mexican art and culture through exhibitions and the performing arts. See the best of Mexico's art and culture here in HemisFair Park. Tuesday-Friday 9 am to 5:30 pm, Saturday-Sunday 11 am to 5 pm. Free.

San Antonio Museum of Art

Housed in an old retired brewery, the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is now one of the largest museums in the Southwest. It has a strong permanent collections of ancient glass and pottery, Greco-Roman statuary, Asian porcelain and artifacts. The museum also an excellent collection of Mexican folk art. Watch for the opening of the Rockerfeller Wing opening this October. The museum is located a short taxi drive from downtown hotels. Monday-Saturday 10 am to 5 pm; Sunday noon to 5 pm. (Tuesday extended hours, with admission free from 3 to 9 pm.) $4 adults, $2 seniors and college students, $1.75 children ages 4-11. North of downtown between Broadway and St. Mary's.

San Antonio Children's Museum

This special museum has hands-on exhibits, targeted to kids 2 to 10 years old. Kids of any age will have a great time, as do the adults who accompany the kids. Located in the center of downtown San Antonio, it's within walking distance of most downtown hotels. Winter hours are Tuesday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm, Saturday until 6 pm, and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. Downtown.

Witte Museum

San Antonio's premier museum, the Witte features history and science exhibits, major national traveling exhibits, family events, live gallery theater, and overnight camp-ins for children. Highlights include Texas dinosaurs, an Egyptian mummy and five historic homes from San Antonio's past. Don't miss the new H-E-B Science Treehouse on the museum grounds! The four-level science center features hands-on exhibits for all ages, an Internet surfing room, live demonstrations, a real treehouse connected by elevated walkways, and outdoor water exhibits on the banks of the San Antonio River. This museum is a short taxi drive from down town San Antonio.
