African American Literature

Having its origins in the slave narratives and the folktales transmitted orally during that period, the literature of the African American has been rich and varied. Beginning with the first published work of fiction (Clotel; Or, the President's Daughter) in 1853, continuing under the influence of W.E.B. Du Bois during the first part of this century, and reaching a flowering during the Harlem Renaissance, major contributions have been made to American literature. Today African American writers , such as Toni Morrison, Alex Haley, and Maya Angelou are recognized as among the most significant and popular authors in this country.

Chicano Literature: A Reference Guide

H.G. Wells

Wells was born in 1866 in Bromley, Kent. Wells career as an author may have been helped by an unfortunate accident as a child. He broke his leg and spent the mandatory rest period reading every book he could get his hands on. It was at the Normal School that Wells came under the wing of the famous biologist Thomas H. Huxley. Wells's "science fiction" ( he never called it such) was clearly influenced by his studies at the Normal School and the interest that he developed in biology. Wells exploded into fame with his first major fiction work: The Time Machine in 1895.

John Steinbeck

John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas California on Feb. 27, 1902, was an American novelist. Best know for his book The Grapes of Wrath (1939), which summed up the bitterness of the Great Depression decade and aroused wide spread sympathy for the hard work of migrant farm workers. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1962.

This is by no means a complete bibliography of all Chicana Lesbian writers. It may serve as an introductory guide to fiction and drama by and about Chicana lesbians.

Tolstoy Studies Journal

Tolstoy Studies Journal was founded in 1988 by Kathleen Parthe, University of Rochester. Professor Parthe edited volumes 1-3 (1988-90). Amy Mandelker, City University of New York, Graduate Center, took over the role of Editor from 1991-93 and published volumes 4-6. The late Charles Isenberg, Reed College, edited volumes 7-8 (1994-96). The current Editor is Donna Orwin, University of Toronto, who has just produced volume 9.
