Chicago Athenaeum International Museum of Architecture and Design

The Chicago Athenaeum is an International Museum of Architecture and Design, appropriately based in the world's first city of modern architecture and design - Chicago. Founded in 1988, the Museum is dedicated to the Art of Design in all areas of the discipline: architecture, industrial, and product design, graphics, and urban planning. The Museum's mission is the advancement of public education about the value of good Design - from the "spoon to the city" - and how design can positively impact the human environment. As the nation's only independent Museum of architecture and design. the Chicago Athenaeum has demonstrated leadership and innovation in bringing the subject of design and its impact on the quality of life before a national and international audience.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright is easily the most famous architect in history and arguably the most original and innovative. His career spanned the entire development of modern architecture and was very important in shaping it despite his refusal to join the prominent architectural associations of his day. His buildings stand as a monument to the genius and inventiveness which be brought to every aspect of his work and many are available for tours around the country.

I.M. Pei

After working a number of jobs for other architectural firms, I.M. Pei opened his own company in 1955. With a reputation for planning bold and modern buildings that relate to their environment, Pei and his firm have designed some of the most prominent and admired buildings in the world.

Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier (né Charles Édouard Jeanneret) was an architect, urbanist, theorist, writer, and a painter. He was born in Switzerland in 1887 and adopted his professional name Le Corbusier in 1922. He worked primarily in France where he died in 1965. As a contemporary of Pablo Picasso and Fernand Leger he had a profound influence on the development of art, architecture, and design during the first half of the twentieth century. Le Corbusier was not only one of the three most influential architects of this century (together with Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe) but also an extremely gifted artist.

Mies Van Der Rohe

Mies Van Der Rohe was born on March 27th, 1886, in Aachen in the German Rhineland. He went to Berlin when he was 19 years old, and entered the firm of Peter Behrens in 1908. He came to the United States in 1937, and became the Director of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1938. He died in 1969.
